Skills For Care Workforce Pathway

The Department of Health and Social Care have been working with Skills for Care to develop the care workforce pathway, so that staff are equipped with the right skills and knowledge to provide high quality care and support. Investing in learning and development opportunities also supports staff retention.

The care workforce pathway will set out clearly what a career in social care means and the level of knowledge, experience and skills required to deliver high-quality, personalised, care and support.

It will empower people working in social care to develop themselves and their career by setting out how they can gain skills, access learning and development, and progress in their careers in a way that meets their aspirations.

The new Care Certificate Qualification Level 2

In line with the care career pathway and to ensure a consistent approach, the new care certificate qualification was launched in June 2024. This qualification has been developed by DHSC’s drive to raise standards and professional outcomes within the care workforce. This qualification is regulated by awarding bodies such as NCFE ensuring a consistent approach to the care certificate nationally.

Where staff hold no current qualifications relating to social care and would struggle to achieve their functional skills level 1 (Maths and English at GCSE grade D to G or equivalent) it is suggested that the new Care Certificate Qualification Level 2 is the development route for those staff.

It needs to be noted that there is a £1500 cost attached to the Care Certificate Qualification that will need to be paid upfront, and funding can only be claimed upon completion.

For new and inexperienced staff, the new Care Certificate Level 2 qualification could be completed within 6 to 8 months, however, more experienced staff may complete it sooner.
